Hello. Thirty-one. Being asked straight out like that makes me brace a little, ha. I'm in my third year back in Osaka.
Take a turn being interviewed. Write a short introduction and give someone a place to ask you a question.
I get in at half past nine and we open at ten. Saying that to someone who lights the stove at three feels almost embarrassing. But when I was in Tokyo I was up at five to catch the first train. I get up later now, and yet I actually eat breakfast.
A convenience-store rice ball, eaten inside the office lift. The wrapper is loud, so I wanted to finish before anyone else got in — it turned into a race against the fourteenth floor. Four years of that, and I don't remember ever winning. Whether that counts as breakfast, I still don't know.
On the fire escape at work. Nothing had happened that day. I was just sitting there, wondering whether I'd still be sitting there next year. It wasn't that I decided — I just noticed it had already been decided. Even so, it took another six months before I said anything to my manager.
From the outside I don't think anything had changed. Same clothes, same train. What changed was what I counted when I woke up. It used to be "how many more years", and it became "how many more months". Only the unit got smaller, and just that made it easier to breathe. These days there's nothing I count in the morning.
